Chief Printing Companys roots date back to the late 1800s and are connected with the debut of local publication Mukwonago Chief. In addition to printing that weekly newspaper, the company also produced items for local businesses and individuals of the time. Much like today, many of these items included letterheads, envelopes, business forms, and other such materials.
Over the years both newspaper and printing company were owned and operated by various proprietors until Dale Dettman sold the newspaper to Ray DeVisser in 1973. At that time, Mr. Dettman continued to operate the printing company as a separate enterprise in the basement of the newspaper office in downtown Mukwonago. He did so until his retirement in 1989.
It was in 1989 that Bob and Debbie Collins of Collins Printing Company in East Troy purchased the business from Mr. Dettman. Initially updating the technology from hot lead typesetting to letterpress printing, services are now more than a decade into to the computer age. Bob and Debbies son Steve joined the business in 1997.
While throughout the years Chief Printing has always been located in Mukwonago, changes in technology and the volume of work brought about the need for the move to updated locations. Chief Printing moved to the Village Pumper building in 1991, then to Monarch Centre in 1997, and to its present location at 525 S. Rochester Street, next to Bartle Jewelers, in 2008.
In mid-2008 a consolidation of operations took place with Central Printing Corporation, a sheet-fed and web press printing company located in Delavan of which the Collins are part owners. That change brought Bob and the printing presses to the Delavan facilities, with Steve remaining in charge of prepress operations and customer service at the Mukwonago location. Steve also works with John Wallace of Top Notch Productions who provides typesetting, layout, and design services for all of your printing needs.
